Stay on Top of Sending Your Article Reprints Where Im Published This Month

,
So I wrote a couple of Mothers Day pieces. One on Mothers Day dilemmas and how to solve them and one on Mothers Day traditions. They did pretty well the first year then I let them rot. I am not the most organized person in the world but I try. Life gets going and I forget to send my articles out and often wish I had an assistant who could get in my face and tell me to send articles annually when they are wanted.

***Hmmm, I finally sucked it up and got a smartphone ... Im thinking I could grab all my article titles (there are over 75 at this point) and figure out when best to send them. At least the holiday-specific and back-to-school ones. I could plug them in my calendar somehow to remind me to send them out.

Anyway ... this year I grabbed the Mothers Day articles from my hard drive and sent each one out separately to all my contacts that are in my book since I was updating the book anyway. That one little action made me at least $250.

For two pieces I wrote years ago.

All I did was mass submit them. Not one at a time emailing, friend. Like blind carbon copy.

Some publications wrote me back and let me know they wanted to use my piece and what they would pay. Some I found while checking my name on issuu.com or Googling the article name. Some emailed me after they used it and let me know they were sending a check.

Where do I write? You want proof? Okey dokey. Palm Beach Parenting, San Diego Family, Calgarys Child, Central Penn Parent, Valley Parent Georgia, Western New York Family. Thats just this month that I know about.

Yes, I am telling you to buy my book. I make money using it 6 years later. I could be making a lot more money using it if I didnt have so many other things going on in my life. And dont think for a second that I take up all the space in these magazines. They needs tons of pieces every month and are dying for good content. There is success for all of us. Money for all of us. A writing career for all of us, writer friend!

Heres the book! You gotta get it and tell your friends! I make the same royalty whether you get the print or ebook version and I recommend the print version so you can mark it up and make changes to it.

Weekly Writer Challenge 2 Write One Entire Article for an RPM RPP

,
In case you missed it, here is Weekly Writer Challenge #1, to write down 10 article ideas for the regional parenting magazines. You can still catch up to us!

AND ... all this is free! Lots of other writers charge beaucoup bucks and call it a CLASS, but folks, I have no class, so this little situation here is FREE! Lets hold each other accountable and make some dang money writing for magazines, increasing our pay as we go!

As with the last challenge, please share this with any bloggers (= aspiring writers) or writers you know so they can participate. I have lately been seeing many writers making one red cent per word to write all day long to pull down the bucks, and I want so badly to pull them out of that situation and let them know their work is worth so much more than that, even if it DOES take weeks to get paid sometimes!

Again, you have until Sunday to do this second challenge, then more challenges will come out on Mondays and you will have 7 days to complete them and report back here! Even if you didnt do it or only half-assed it, let me know, because chances are I might not always be rockin the challenge, either.

At the very least, we can offer support to each other. Dont forget there is also a Facebook fan page for this site where we can interact and you can always email me at mommykerrie at yahoo dot com, and when it comes time to start submitting, you have to have the resource Im using so we can be Submission Twins.

So, here you go:

CHALLENGE #2 is to WRITE AN ENTIRE ARTICLE for the regionals (the smalls). Yep, pick one of your 10 award-winning ideas and turn it into something. If those people I referenced above can turnout 1,000-word articles with HOURS for a deadline and make $10, you can certainly take a week to write something pretty great, including personal quotes (dont have to be local) and some nice research and maybe even some personal anecdotes from you.

If you need help, just write me (see above). And do not freak out!

Check out these links for some ideas of stuff Ive gotten published. At the very least, you will be like, "Wow, she got THAT published and made actual decent bank off of it? I could write that in my sleep and better!"

Heres something pretty recent about organic gardening on a budget from an online gig I have. Then I spun it a little bit and submitted to all the RPMs (I have about 160 email addresses in my address book).

Heres one of my VERY FIRST pieces, from back in 2009 when I was super green.

Feel free to Google my name+articles for more parenting mayhem.

Good luck!

Roughing Up Other Writers Im an Article Bouncer!

,
I like to get really drunk and rough up other writers online. I punch their articles right out of other magazines. (just kidding!)

So a fellow writer wrote me and said this (Ive edited the email severely so its definitely not a quote but its such a great story I had to share ... then below that is my response to her):

Hi Kerrie,

Just wanted to share with you a funny story because I think you bumped me right out of a spot in  the XXX Family Magazine August issue...!!

I sent Jane Editor an essay about blahdy blah way back in November and she liked it so she asked me to follow up with her closer to the summer months.  I followed up in May and she said she would schedule it for the August issue.  I didnt hear back from her again and wondered what happened so I took a look at the August issue online and found your wonderful article on the magazines blog instead!  Doh!

So, Im happy for you!  But sad for me...oh well.  I know I have to keep putting myself out there but this writing business is killing me...I get some great feedback from editors who say they love my stuff and want to/plan to print it, but then I never hear from them again.

The same thing happened with the XXX Magazine where an editor planned to print a commentary I wrote and asked for revisions and everything. She followed up and told me she planned to print my piece within the next two weeks...and that was back in January.  Dang thing never saw the light of day.  UGH!

Heres my response:

That stinks. Sorry about that. Ive always had problems with THAT EDITOR doing that ... I open it up expecting to see something she said of mine she would use and then its not there.

I think you have to keep bugging her, which I dont always have time to do. Now they are switching editors ... if the email changes Ill send out an update if you subscribe to the blog emails.

Hoping NEW Jane Editor will be all on top of it. All I can offer is KEEP TRYING. The only reason Im in something monthly is that I have about 70 pieces going at once on a reprint list. The odds are ever in my favor, you know? Keep it up. We are all basically writing the same stuff ... its not even always about who did it better ... just who is top of mind or which pub has the more organized editor. I am putting this on the blog ... to maybe help encourage others?????

Keep at it!!!!!!!!!!!! Or just scrap the RPMs and go for the nationals. Maybe thats your thing instead!

Kerrie
