7 Reasons Not to Hire People to do Vector Stock For You

1. Return of investment. 

You may not get back what you have invested from the person you hired. The reason being is because a stock vector may not sell at the end of the day or at worst, gets rejected. Here is an example of what you will get per vector depending on the quality of the vector. Bear in mind all of the figures below are just estimations and may not be accurate at all.

2. Management.

Hiring someone means you have to look into his work to ensure that there is quality control. You also need to have discussion (waste of time) with him and sometimes you have to look at his angry face when you comment on his works. This is called management. And managements means more investment.

3. Potential of infringement.

How do you know that a vector he produced are not stolen from somewhere else? Will you check? There are millions of vector out there and most are free. Bear in mind that this is a very serious offend if your portfolio contains a copied of others people work. You may get your whole account banned for just 1 vector.

4. He may become your competitor.

Now, isnt that something common and shouldnt be a concern? Yes, it is common if you are in car repair industry, hair dressing, or software house, but vector stock industry is different. Imagine your portfolio is popular with seamless pattern design, and this guy who has been working for you has learned all the necessary skills to produce back the similar, but better vectors. He may soon start a new portfolio that competes with you on the same category. You have to understand that you have no advantage in this because buyers dont really care much about your reputation, nor do they have emotional attachment with you.

5. He can do it too.

When you are making a lot of money from him, he will sooner or later realize that he can do this on his own. This will happen a lot sooner than you can expect.You must understand that anyone with illustration skills can do this on his own. All he need is a computer, a software, and some keywording skills. Nothing more, right? This is not an industry whereby you need a lot of resources to start.

6. He may moonlight from you.

Whats stopping him from producing higher quality vector for his own portfolio, and producing lower quality one for you? 

7. You learn less.

On a technical side, you will be spending a lot of time managing your workers. Will you still have time sharpening your skills on illustration? Afterall, the most important aspect in this industry is your illustration skills.

The above reasons make sense if you applied it on vector stock. However, if you are in stock photography, then the above 7 reasons do not applied anymore. The overhead to become a big and successful stock photography contributor is very high. You need cameras, models, studio, photography equipments, and travelling expenses.

Travel “Loophole” the Airlines PRAY You Never Learn

This stuff is never advertised!

And most people don’t make a dime on this loophole so they’re not going to tell you about it either.

I used the loophole on a flight from LA to Boston recently, and when I mentioned it to the airline reservation clerk she pretended like it didn’t exist.

But believe me….it’s very real….and it works!

One airline was fined $375,000 recently for trying to withhold this loophole from a passenger.

And forget about getting info from Uncle Sam. Maybe it’s the $40 million airline lobby…oh well.

Real People Using “the Loophole”

·        Harvey Oreck, a former barrister from Vancouver, British Columbia has scored more than 30 free flights!

·        Christopher Lotz, from San Jose CA scored a FREE flight voucher worth about $1,000 -- enough for a European trip!

Here’s the deal…

Airline overbooking is not illegal.

Airlines always overbook flights to compensate for the "no-shows."

The downside to overbooking is passengers typically get "bumped" as a result.

Listen carefully….

When overbooking occurs, the Department of Transportation (DOT) requires airlines to ask passengers if they’re willing to give up their seats voluntarily, in exchange for compensation.

Bumped passengers are entitled to compensation!

Getting Bumped for CASH!

According to the Associated Press, 69,000 passengers were bumped in 2010!

Most of these passengers didn’t receive a dime in compensation because they didn’t know how “the game” is played.

Heres How the “Bumping Game” Works

At the check-in area, airline employees will look for passengers willing to give up their seats when a flight has been oversold.

If youre not in a hurry you can give up your seat in exchange for compensation and a later flight.

But don’t agree to the “bumping game” until you get answers to these questions:

Can the airline provide a confirmed seat on the alternate airline? The alternate flight may be acceptable. But if they offer to put you on standby flight thats full, you could be stranded.

Will the airline provide other amenities such as free meals, a hotel room, phone calls, and ground transportation? If not, you might have to spend the money they offer you on food or lodging while you wait for the next flight. This is a big one!

The DOT does not say how much an airline is required to compensate “bumped” passengers.

This means the airlines can negotiate with passengers for an acceptable amount of money or a free trip (and possibly other incentives).

The airlines provide employees with guidelines for bargaining with passengers.

They may select the volunteers who are willing to sell back their reservations for the lowest price!

If the airline offers you a free ticket, ask about the restrictions.

How long the ticket good for?

Is the ticket "blacked out" during holiday periods?

Can the tickets be used for international flights? This is a stickler! I received a free flight and compensation, but I found out later it couldn’t be used for a flight to Bermuda. I complained and the ticket was revised!

Most importantly, can you make the reservation, and if so, how far before departure are you permitted to make it?

Three Things to Consider When Accepting “DBC”

Denied Boarding Compensation or DBC requires airlines to give all involuntarily bumped passengers a written statement describing his or her rights.

The statement must explain how the airline decides who can board an oversold flight and who does not.

Involuntary bumped passengers are entitled to a payment of “denied boarding compensation”. The actual amount depends on the price of their ticket and the length of the delay.

If you are bumped involuntarily and the airline arranges substitute transportation which is scheduled to get you to your final destination (including later connections) within one hour of your original scheduled arrival time, no compensation is required.

If the airline arranges substitute transportation which is scheduled to arrive at your destination between one and two hours after your original arrival time (within four hours on international flights), the airline must pay you an amount equal to your one-way fare to your final destination, with a $400 maximum.

If the substitute transportation is scheduled to get you to your destination more than two hours later (four hours internationally), or if the airline does not make any substitute travel arrangements for you, the compensation doubles (200% of your fare, $800 maximum).

In most cases you’ll keep your original ticket and use it on another flight.

If you choose to make your own arrangements, you can request an "involuntary refund" for the ticket for the flight you were bumped.

The “denied boarding compensation” is essentially a payment for your inconvenience.

Surprise “Conditions” Airlines Don’t Want You to Know

In addition to the ticketing deadline, each airline has a check-in deadline. This is the amount of time before scheduled departure when you must present yourself to the airline at the airport.

For domestic flights most carriers require you to be at the departure gate between 10 minutes and 30 minutes before scheduled departure, but some deadlines can be an hour or longer.

To be eligible for compensation, you must have a confirmed reservation. A written confirmation issued by the airline or an authorized agent qualifies you in even if the airline cant find your reservation in the computer, as long as you didnt cancel your reservation or miss a reconfirmation deadline.

You must meet the airlines deadline for buying your ticket. Discount tickets must usually be purchased within a certain number of days after the reservation was made. Other tickets have to be picked up no later than 30 minutes before the flight.

Check-in deadlines on international flights can be as much as three hours before scheduled departure time.

Some airlines may require you to be at the ticket/baggage counter. But most airlines require you to be in the boarding area.

Important Note: If you miss the ticketing or check-in deadline, you may have lost your reservation and your right to compensation if the flight is oversold. No compensation is due if the airline arranges substitute transportation which is scheduled to arrive at your destination within one hour of your originally scheduled arrival time.

If the airline must substitute a smaller plane the carrier is not required to pay people who are bumped as a result.

In addition, on flights using aircraft with 30 through 60 passenger seats, compensation is not required if you were bumped due to safety-related aircraft weight or balance constraints.

The rules do not apply to charter flights, or to scheduled flights operated with planes that hold fewer than 30 passengers. The rules do not apply to international flights inbound to the United States.

However some airlines on these routes may follow them voluntarily.

When a flight is oversold and there are not enough volunteers, some airlines bump passengers with the lowest fares first. Once you have purchased your ticket, the most effective way to reduce the risk of being bumped is to get to the airport early.

For passengers in the same fare class the last passengers to check in are usually the first to be bumped, even if they have met the check-in deadline.

Allow extra time; assume that the airport access road is backed up, the parking lot is full, and there is a long line at the check-in counter.

However, if you arrive so early that your airline has another flight to your destination leaving before the one that you are booked on, either switch to the earlier flight or dont check your bag until after the first flight leaves.

If you check your bag right away, it might get put on the earlier flight and remain unattended at your destination airport for hours. Airlines may offer free transportation on future flights in place of a check for denied boarding compensation.

If you are bumped involuntarily you have the right to insist on a check if that is your preference.

When you cash a check (and accept the free flight), you lose the right to demand money from the airline later on.

If being bumped costs you more money than the airline will pay you at the airport, you can try to negotiate a higher settlement with their complaint department. If this doesnt work, you have 30 days from the date on the check to decide if you want to accept the amount of the check.

You are always free to decline the check (e.g., not cash it) and take the airline to court to try to obtain more compensation.

Dont be a "no-show." If you are holding confirmed reservations you dont plan to use, notify the airline. If you dont, they will cancel all onward or return reservations on your trip.

Improve Your Odds of Getting Bumped

There will always be airline passengers with urgent travel needs.  Their top priority is arriving at their destination on time.

The airlines are required by law to seek out the passengers who are willing to give up their seats for compensation before bumping anyone in- voluntarily.

Harvey Oreck whom I mentioned earlier is often referred to as a “professional bumper”.

When Harvey hears an announcement in the airline terminal that begins “Ladies and Gentlemen…” he knows it’s a signal for an overbooked flight. He also knows it means free trips and/or cash vouchers for the “bumped” volunteers.

Oreck, a semiretired lawyer and former barrister from Vancouver, British Columbia, estimates he and his family have scored airline vouchers for about 30 flights from the bumps that he has taken over the past five years, paying for trips to Thailand, Mexico and other locales!

On a recent trip home from Las Vegas, Harvey accepted a bump to a later flight and accepted a free flight voucher.

A few minutes later, someone backed out of his original flight, allowing Oreck to go home as planned and keep his already-issued voucher!

"You have to be alert and proactive," Oreck said.

Airline over-sales swelled 12% in the 2010, giving flexible fliers a greater chance to land some great freebies and offset the rising cost of air travel.

After talking to airline employees, savvy travelers, professional “bumpers” and travel experts I refined my list to seven of the best ways to increase your odds of getting bumped.

Always get to the boarding area early. Be friendly and let the airline check-in agent you are willing to be bumped

Book flights on the busiest travel dates, times and holidays

Books flights on airlines with the highest “bumping” percentage

Books flights on the most popular business traveler times and dates

Book flights on early flights (before 8:00 AM) rather than later (after 7:00 PM)

Book single reservations

Book flights on the most popular destinations (New York City, Orlando, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Miami are the top five)

Investing Choosing a “Passive” Rather than an “Active” Fund Can Save You Money

If you are an investor and are keen to save money while you’re making money, you might consider buying a “passive” or “tracker” fund rather than a traditional fund. Typically, buying a passive fund is much cheaper than buying traditional funds, since there is no need to put out money for a professional to manage your investments.

We’ve nothing against professional fund managers, but numerous comparison studies have been done in recent years and many of these have suggested that large numbers of investment pros have simply failed to beat the average return from the markets in which they specialise. Some critics have even gone so far as to contend that random selection would have been just as successful, not to mention cheaper, than hiring an investment expert to handle your money. We wouldn’t go that far, but the point is well taken.

Passive funds carry fees too of course, but they are often significantly lower than that incurred by active funds. To give an example, a tracker fund might charge .25 percent, while an active fund might charge 1.7 percent or more.

But let’s back up a bit, for the benefit of those who might be unfamiliar with active versus passive funds.


What are active and passive funds?
“Active fund” simply refers to actively managed investment funds, which, as the name implies, are run by a professional fund manager or investment research team. These people make all of the investment decisions on the investor’s behalf. Presumably they have extensive access to research in different markets, above and beyond the information you could dig up yourself. They may meet with the companies’ principals so they can assess their prospects before making any investment decisions.

The whole point about paying an investment manager is to get a return that is superior to normal market returns. Indeed, actively managed funds may have the potential for much higher returns than average. In addition, if you have a competent professional carefully tracking the market and strategically managing your funds – babysitting your money, as it were – that person can move the funds around to maximise gains or shield you from possible losses. That’s how it works in theory anyway, and sometimes the extra cost for investment management is money well spent. But as noted above, many investment pros have failed to beat the market, bringing into question the necessity of paying for this extra service.

Passive investment funds do nothing more than track a market – hence the name “tracker funds” – and as a consequence they charge far less than actively managed funds. For the most part they are run by a computer, which purchases all or the majority of the assets in a particular market in order to give you a return which reflects that market’s performance.

And of course there’s a trade-off: you don’t have that extra “human touch.” A computer can only do so much. On the other hand, you don’t have that extra fee either. It’s totally up to you; like most things, choosing a specific type of investment fund involves a trade-off of some sort.

OK. You have done all of your research, and decided you really do want to become an owner operator.

Hopefully, you have:

• Read this entire blog
• Talked with other owner operators, especially at the company you want to lease on to.
• Run a "What If" with the Interactive Cost Per Mile Calculator and found you really could make a profit.  Not just a profit, but enough income to pay all of your expenses and to have enough to live on, too.  (Dont forget, you also need to save enough to cover repairs or a major breakdown and enough to live on while you are getting the work done.)
• Made a business plan.
• Gotten your family to support you.  You would be surprised how many people quit driving a truck because their family doesnt like for them to be away from home.
• Decided what kind of entity you want to have.
• Decided what you will be hauling so you can spec your equipment properly?
  Have you found a truck?  Do you need a trailer too?  If you are leasing to a company, many of them have requirements as to how old of truck they will lease.  Be sure to check it out before you buy.
• Made sure your equipment will pass a DOT, state and company inspection.
• Talked with a loan officer at the bank, credit union, or loan company that will financing your equipment to see what information they require, and to see if you can even get financing for your equipment?
• Figured out how you are going to get your Commercial Drivers License (CDL).  Will you be going to a truck driving school?  If not, do you know how you are going to take a road test?
• Found an accountant or tax professional and got a list of what you need to keep track of before you start buying equipment.
• Check out Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA) for vast amounts of information.  As before, I recommend that if you do become an owner operator, that you join OOIDA (non owner operators can join, too).

I would advise you to get your CDL first.  If you cant pass your tests, it would be a shame if you had already bought a truck and/or trailer.  Then you would be stuck with having to try to sell them.  Now is not a good time to try to sell your equipment.

You do not have to go to a school to get a CDL.


You do have to take both a written test and a (skills) road test. If you can pass both, then you will be issued a license.


A word of CAUTION, however,  I know you can rent trucks in some states, but in my state that is not possible. I know of no place (and I have looked) where you can rent a truck to take a road test.


Also, we tried to loan our truck to a friend to take his test in, and examiner giving the test wouldnt let him use our truck because he wasnt listed on our insurance. Dont forget, you have to take your road test in the "type of vehicle" you will be operating. In other words, you have to have a "Class A" type vehicle to get a Class A license.


In my state you must supply your own vehicle" and pay the road test examiner $75.00.


Also (any state) before you can even apply for a permit, you must have a long form DOT physical.  Cost depends on the doctor.


Dont forget, if you are applying for your own authority, you have to have a drug and alcohol program in place.  You will be required to have pre-employment  drug testing before you begin to operate your truck.  If you are leasing your truck to a company, they will do handle the drug and alcohol testing.

After you decide what type of entity you will become (sole proprietor, partnership, LLC, corporation, etc.) you may have to get an Employers Identification Number (EIN), also called a Federal Employers Identification Number (FEIN).  Its FREE! and will be issued immediately if you apply online. If you will be a sole proprietor, your EIN will be your social security number, unless you will be hiring employees (including family members), then you will need an EIN.  All others will have to file a IRS Form SS4, or file online at Employer ID Number (EIN).  See: 6) How to Do Bookkeeping and Other Necessary Paperwork Permits and Taxes for more information about sole proprietorships, partnerships, spousal partnerships, employees,and more.

After you get your federal EIN, you will have to apply for a business license with your home state.  (If you are going to be a sole proprietor, you will apply using your social security number, unless you will have employees - then you need an EIN.)  You may also have to apply for a business license with your county (parish), and/or city.  If you are going to be a LLC (limited liability company or LLP (limited liability partnership) the you will also need to have liability insurance.

Are you going to be leasing to a company or getting your own authority?  In some states you will need a USDOT number before you can get your license plates.   ** This requirement is being phased out by September 1, 2012.  Since it is until effect until then, I am not sure if you would be required to have it at this time or not.  Check with you state registration office. **  If you are applying for your own authority, you have to have a USDOT number.

Will you be operating intrastate or interstate? (intrastate is within one state only, interstate is operating in more than one state).

Will you be hauling hazardous materials (hazmat)?  Then you need a hazmat endorsement (any state).  You will also need to have a background check and be fingerprinted and get a Hazmat Endorsement Threat Assessment.  Go to Transportation Security Administration for details.  Cost is $89.25.  It is valid for 5 years, unless you transfer (to another state), upgrade (add endorsements), or renew a license, then you need to go through (and pay) all of this again.

If you will be loading or unloading at ports, you will need a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).  You can get information about this at Department of Homeland Security - TWIC.  The cost is $132.50 and is valid for 5 years.


If you plan to operate in Canada or Mexico, you will also need a passport.  United States government passport information. Cost is $120.00

The answer to each of these questions determines what you need to apply for.  Go to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) registration and licensing for a matrix (list) of the required forms, and to apply online.

You will, of course, need license plates for your tractor and your trailer (if you are purchasing both).  Contact your state Department of Motor Vehicles to find out how to apply.  Unless you are applying for license plates within 30 days of your purchase of your tractor, you will need a copy of IRS Form 2290, Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax Return, showing you paid your road use taxes. This is an annual fee.  It is  $550.00 a year for an 80,000 pound vehicle (except logging.)

The type of trucking insurance you need will depend on whether you are leased to a company or have your own operating authority, what type of goods you will be hauling, and whether your equipment is financed or paid for.  Be sure to read all of the pages at the FMCSA website.  Join OOIDA ($45 a year) and they will give you all the help you need to decide what kind of insurance you need.  You can even purchase it from them.  Just as with your personal vehicle insurance, your driving record, type of vehicle and the company you buy from will determine the cost

If you are leasing your truck to a company, you may also be required to be fingerprinted, buy Occupational Accident Insurance, and/or Workers Compensation Insurance.

I know that everyone reading this wanted a nice, neat little list of what you need and how to get it, and how much it would cost.  As you can see, however, there are so many variables, it is impossible for me to tell you exactly what you need.  In addition to the federal requirements, each state has their own rules.

The costs are also impossible to calculate without knowing exactly who, what, where, why and how, but here is a rough list:

All graphics designers in this world should sell their artworks online. Below are 10 reasons of why every graphic designers in this world should try and sell their artworks online. If you are new to this, I strongly recommend you to read the FAQ here to understand how everything works.

1. You already have the knowledge to draw artworks, and it is a waste not to use your skills to gain more income for yourself. I started out as a web designers, earnings $3000 a month, and now just after 6 months into microstock industry, I have earn an extra $2000 a month (even without doing anything anymore).

2. You dont have to convince anyone. I understand that the frustration we have as a graphics designers. We feel frustrated when our clients dislike our works and request for changes. However, in this industry, you only need to pass through the agency reviewers (which is always easy). Even amateurs with some simple buttons design can manage to sell their artworks online. Take a look at an artwork I did 6 months ago. Believe it or not, I have manage to made over $300.00 in just 6 months time with it. And the sales is still coming in. For the record, I have only spent 3 hours with the below artwork. This simply means, my 3 hours of work is worth $300.00 and it is still counting.

3. No marketing needed from us. Yes, microstock agencies in this world are huge companies. They are companies that worth over $50 millions. Marketing and advertisement campaign are done by them. They are the hypermarket, and we are the producer of the products inside. Joining these agencies will allow you to concentrate on your work fully and need not worry about no one buying it.

4. Your vector artworks will be on sale forever. Once you have successfully uploaded your works into these stock agencies, you can then sleep well at night and check on your earning the next morning everyday. No business can be better than this for a graphic designers.

So what else can you do on Fiverr.com besides writing and proofreading? 

Well, I personally branched out with gigs like these: 

selling ebooks (didn’t work out)

giving advice on writing for regional parenting magazines

writing blog posts for posting on my own blog

creating a dynamic table of contents for an ebook for Kindle

doing book and app reviews

doing social media (Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest) since I have a decent following on each of those platforms. Its good to try new things!

Gigs Ive purchased include gigs for ebook covers, Facebook fan page covers, home-made marshmallows (shipped) and these cute little cube animals (shipped) for the kids. Think Etsy meets EVERYTHING!

Will 2014 Be the Year You Get Published ! Join the Cult of Getting Published!

Back when I only had three kids and was still hanging on to that dream of being a writer like a dog with a pork chop, I felt lost. But ...

What was I going to write about? How to pick between all the ideas swirling around in my head? Once written, where in the world would I send my stuff?

Well, I finally did get something written and I sent it off to my local regional parenting magazine, Kansas City Parent. The logical thing to do, right? Lots of writers do it (and then get stuck only writing for their local magazine and dont realize there are dozens and dozens more who also want their piece). Once I got my act together I got to see it in the May/June issue of Calgarys child here. After that, it evolved into this and sold more often. And thats just one article. I have about 100 in circulation these days.

But Im getting ahead of myself. Back to WHERE will I send my stuff besides my local place?

Well, I found this outdated, nowhere-near-complete list called Parenting Publications of America online. I used that as a starting point to find more magazines all over the country (and Canada and England and Australia) and started collecting editor email addresses any way I could. It took a lot of hours of research, and all without an Internet connection at home.

After I entered all the email addresses and information into my email account, I went to town writing and submitting. And I had success!

Thats when I decided to write/compile this back in 2009 to help others do the same, and its now in the 5th edition (dont be fooled by more expensive and 1/4 of the size knock-offs that dont include the markets and want you to spend money on the information THEN spend hours of your time hunting down email addresses like tiny little email deer).

So I wanna know: how many ideas do you have? Do You Procrastinate in Your Business

I have so many little business things to do that I keep putting off and they could each mean sales in two of the companies I work with doing direct sales. I should do them first thing in the morning when the kids are sleeping and I have a bit of brain power but I keep putting them off.

I need to send emails to the people who requested Jamberry nail wrap samples and let them know they were sent and that they can contact me at these different places. I need to send emails to all the people who requested samples from way back on to see if they tried their samples and if they would like to buy, party or join my team. Can’t hurt to ask; I’m just not asking.

I need to do the same with Younique, only anyone who tries a sample of that buys so no follow-up there … not too many samples sent yet but each one bought something.

I ordered thank you cards in bulk on ebay today so I can start writing thank you notes to past customers and include a freebie in each one! I love to show appreciation for my customers!
